All Aboard the Sushi Train
If you love sushi like I love sushi, then Okinawa Japan is a good place to be, and the sushi train just keeps on rolling it out on schedule. Fresh, delicate, lovely morsels in bite sized bits sitting atop brightly colored plates zip by your table, the only thing you have to do is eat. Whoever invented the sushi train was a genius.
Green tea is on the house. Lines of tuna belly pass by, then sea urchin roe, then shrimp, clams, octopus, and if you not squeamish there is Natto, a fermented soy bean sticky paste that reminds me of peanut butter that has gone rancid. I shall pass on this for I have eaten it once a couple of decades ago, and I still can't get the taste our of my mouth.
The cost of your meal is determined by the number and design of plates that you stack up for your waitress to count at the end of the meal. As you can see I came hungry for sushi. I thank the little creatures for giving their lives to satisfy my love of sushi. All this for less than the cost of eating at McDonalds. When in Okinawa, eat like the Okinawans.
As we were leaving, an elderly woman probably near 100 years of age sat down by our table. I couldn't resist asking her the secret to longevity. After all, Okinawa has more 100 year old citizens per capita than anywhere else in the world. This tiny Island is considered a 'blue zone' for longevity. I looked deeply into her eyes expecting to hear the secret to her existence. With a wide grin she said, "Eat well...love well...choose your friends wisely...but foremost...don't die young." Eureka, it was there in front of me all the time, and now the secret is yours. All aboard...shall we?
